Welcome to the fabrica of Marcus Aurelius Vulpius, the blacksmith. Vulpius is a Batavi, who gained Roman citizenship after having served in the auxiliary. Vulpius learned his trade in the army. Many soldiers became skilled at various crafts, as battles in the second century were few and far between. On completing his service under the reign of Marcus Aurelius, he was awarded citizenship, adopting a Roman name. He retained his Batavian name, the fox, as a cognomem and returned to the lands of the Batavi near Noviomagus.
He is employed by the owner of a modest villa rustica, a Roman style farm, making tools, utensils and knives. Part of these are for use at the villa, but he also does commission work for the soldiers of the nearby vexillatio fortress and sells his products at markets, sharing part of the proceeds with the owner of his workshop at the villa.
Should you be interested in Vulpius' work or perhaps ordering / commissioning an item, send an e-mail to infoATnoviolocus.com and Robert, the present day blacksmith bringing the character of Vulpius back to life, will be in touch.
